One of our guest’s favorite activities to play during their downtime at West Canyon Ranch is horseshoes. We play for keeps at West Canyon Rach with the losing team washing the dishes at the end. If you aren’t familiar with horseshoes, you will soon fall in love with the game.
After a fun day of elk hunting, we invite you to pick up the horseshoes. You can play the game with two players alternating turns, throwing the horseshoes at stakes in the ground. You can score by throwing “ringers” or by throwing the horseshoe nearest to the stake. A ringer is a horseshoe that has been thrown and actually lands on the stake. If none of the horseshoes encircle the stake, the players will determine which throw landed nearest it.
The National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA) is the official governing body of the sport. The NHPA maintains an up-to-date set of rules and their specifications of the game on their website. However, once you start playing the game, you will quickly begin picking it up.
West Canyon Ranch has a longstanding history with the sport. If you ask any of our guests about their time at the Ranch, you will quickly hear about their guided elk hunt experience mixed in with a story or two of when they played horseshoes.
While West Canyon has played horseshoes since opening our doors to guests, the horseshoes game started long before us. Its history began in the early 1900s with the first players using a center stake and authentic horseshoes. People quickly picked up the sport, and the first World Championship was held in 1907. Since then, rules have changed, and people determined their own versions of the game. That is why the NHPA continually monitors the sport, establishing the official rules and regulations.
Along with horseshoes, West Canyon Ranch allows guests to bring their own games to enjoy throughout their visit. Whether it is playing cards with your group or bringing Spikeball, there are a variety of games and activities you can bring with you to the Ranch.
